Ahmed Mohamud Yuusuf is the CEO and Chair of Hormuud Telecom and has led the Somali company from humble roots to become the largest telecommunication and mobile money operator in Somalia, with further strategic alliances in banking, remittances, construction, electricity, philanthropy and education. Ahmed’s approach has always focused on impact investments to drive Somalia’s economy forward for growth, financial inclusion and stability.
Hormuud Telecom celebrates 20 years in business in 2022 as well as achieving the GSMA mobile money certification. Ahmed has introduced novel business approaches with mobile money being free at the point of use and a direct rather than an agency mobile money model. With 76% of Somali’s unbanked, mobile money has become the primary medium for economic exchanges in Somalia with approximately 70% of adults using mobile money and 155 million mobile money transactions per month.
