The use of broadband services remains a challenge for most people in the continent. GSMAi finds although 82% of the Sub Saharan Africa population is covered by mobile broadband signals, 72% still remain excluded from broadband access as at the end of 2020.1 In Africa, the limited digital ID ecosystem, the restricted flow of data across countries, and inadequate amounts of licensed spectrum are some hurdles that face a sector in responding to consumer demand and facilitating access to critical services and e-commerce.

Africa has the chance to harness the opportunity presented by broadband access as a driver of social and economic growth through investment and innovation.

It is in recognition of this that this session will seek to address the subject of the pace at which government policy is keeping up with the pace of technological developments; as well as policy developments required to further catapult Africa to the digital economy.
